Comments and Reviews from users:

Suresh Gautam: “Trail paths are the very accurate. App claims about alerting when user goes off-route, that didn't happen when I used it in two different trails. And most annoying, which I have seen in other reviews as well, app will not record the activity. It was showing me all the stats from start to finish but it's nowhere to be seen now. At this point I am questioning my decision to pay for subscription.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Bryan: “I've been using this app for over 10 years and the older versions were so simple and basic. Now it's cluttered with so much tracking, recording, and other pointless nonsense. Take for example when using the map and searching for trails, there are filters on top of page and large search bar taking up half the map. Why? There's already and option for filters. Also, navigating downloaded map gets annoying when the record button pops up and I don't want to record. Please bring back basic version.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Alfred Kell: “I downloaded the app and paid for it while I was in the middle of nowhere in the Black Forrest in Germany (I still had a cell signal!). The app is a super resource and I decided to purchase the worldwide maps to save having to purchase anything in the future. The overall performance was very good and I was taken down trails I don't think I'd have found with a map. The voice directions telling me to turn were very helpful. My GPS seems to be slightly off the Komoot data so a lot of times I was walking on the path but the program didn't recognize this--but I was still informed of turns I had to take. I don't know if the GPS problem is with my cell phone or the app, but since the turns were still given to me I don't have a problem with the function. I was unable to figure out how to get the map to turn in the direction I'm walking. The arrow that is by my position dot was helpful when I was trying to determine the way to walk, but I'd like to have the map turn the direction that I'm standing instead of always facing north (I assume). This may be user error/learning on my part, but the map rotating should be standard and shutting off the rotation should be the option. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and the maps that are provided to use.” – 4/5 in Play Store

David Gilbertson: “Annoying that every time you finish an activity you have answer 20 questions and press next, next, next, next ... Also, I don't understand buying "regions". In the app, the screens don't work and I can't actually see how big a region is, and on the web it says "right click the map" but that doesn't work. Also the first time I used it the line showing where I'd been didn't show up after switching to satellite view. Seems like the quality control is quite low.” – 2/5 in Play Store

Pros Easy to use, great for tracking progress, motivating

Comments and Reviews from users:

Richard Altman: “When I first used it, I would have rated it a 1 (or uninstalled). It had to be set to always track (versus only when app is in use) because for some reason when the phone went to sleep it stopped tracking otherwise. BUT, After a lot of back and forth with the authors (they were very responsive) and some testing on betas with them, the latest version where you can prevent the phone from sleeping is the best of both worlds. I have it set to track only when in use and to keep the phone awake when recording. Kudos to the developers for working with me and correcting the issue I was having!” – 5/5 in Play Store

Noah Stemann: “Programming on the app is Outstanding, if you're looking for a progress tracker this has to be the one. Click the cam shutter twice it's designed like a digital camera to focus the lense and I liked it, biked 55 miles. I'll consider paying for pro to support them, I'm satisfied with what you get for free and they don't push you to pay for anything, heck I once downloaded a "free" app and couldn't even use it unless I paid. Relive is different.” – 5/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “Amazing app! It helps a ton to check cool trails and also, record for others to follow yours! However, lately it's been calculating vertical gain and loss very inaccurately. Perhaps support could chime in here. My latest trail says I had 3.3 km in vertical gain. This is impossible obviously. So I'm sure it's got some bug in there that needs to be fixed. Also, seems there is an issue with reporting your trail buddies and like others, it eats my battery like crazy in spite of having closed apps.” – 4/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “Once great, now ... meh. A couple of years ago, it was easy to find trails and just get started hiking. I contributed quite a few myself. I took a break from using the app and now I discovered that I have to pay to get gps tracking on trails. I guess Wikiloc had to choose some kind of revenue model. I just wish it wasn't one that drew me the app in the first place.” – 2/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “Updated review for newest version as of 12/14/2018: New version has tracking controls used while recording your route. The controls take up half the screen, limiting your ability to see what's on the screen, especially when zoomed in. Would be nice if they could be minimized/hidden. New version also seems to drain my phone battery much faster than before, even when in airplane mode. Now limits number of maps I can import. Unlock the feature for $29.99 a year? What a bunch of BS.” – 3/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “Great for finding GPS while hiking without mobile service. I've downloaded it on my old phones too. I do have issues when trying to transfer my data from my old phone to a new phone. It's a pain in the ass. I dont understand why I cant just transfer a file with all of my maps and waypoints and pictures from my old device. I would pay extra for that. the app works great when I finally get it set up, but changing devices SUCKS” – 4/5 in Play Store

Pros Easy to use, comprehensive maps, great features for planning and tracking trips.
Cons Can be expensive, some features require a subscription, can be slow to load maps.

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “When I first downloaded GAIA a few years ago it seemed to perform well and I was quite happy with it - so much so that I renewed my contract for 5 years (not cheap). However, they have made changes to the app that seem to cause more crashes and freeze-ups, and saved maps definitely load slower. Most frustrating of all is that I can no longer create area maps on my laptop; I can only do this function on my tiny phone screen. What idiot thought that change was a good idea? I'm about ready to delete the app and try a competitor's product. GAIA used to be good, now it's just frustrating!” – 3/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “This app has a lot of great features. I particularly like all the available layers and the ability to add multiple layers with custom opacity. The cloud sync is really useful too, especially since you can view your data on their website. Unfortunately the app has quite a few usability issues. The most frustrating for me is that downloading maps is very slow and buggy. This is a really important and useful feature, but it's almost unusable as it's currently implemented.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Pros Detailed and accurate maps, user-friendly interface, versatile and useful for many activities.
Cons Can be expensive for some users, certain features may not be available in all areas, and the app can be slow at times.

Comments and Reviews from users:

Alex Bardill: “Been using the app for months to plan and follow hikes. I still carry a paper map around in case of emergencies, but I haven't used it since installing the app. The app is just so much more convenient. One feature I would like to see is the ability to add nodes/waypoints anywhere on a route, rather than just at the end. I'm surprised to see so many people having performance issues with the app. For me it starts up instantly, has never crashed and doesn't excessively drain my battery (Pixel 5).” – 5/5 in Play Store

Simon Garrett: “New app looks nice, but issues: Map STILL aligns True rather than Grid N. Please change. List of saved routes uses too much screen space so hard to scroll. Need an option not to show the map, or make it smaller. The icon to centre the map on current location changes the zoom. Please don't change the zoom, leave it where the user has set it. But it does look nice.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Daniel Schweighardt: “Best for finding trails in any area. Mapping a route can be a big help in areas you don't know well. It's not strong for social interaction, although it's getting better. Its strength is in mapping and routes populated by users. Tons of different heat maps and trail descriptions, shows elevation and all the useful data. GUI for ride results can use important.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Amberly. W.: “Not affordable, everything requires a + subscription and from what I read they doubled the price recently, can't give anymore than 2 bc I can't use the app to it's full potential. And the 2 trails I tried were supposed to be green..almost beginner trails...but were blue in the least, cpulsnt see the 3d map, or read the trail stats, read reviews, i put myself in danger without knowing it bc I trusted the guidance of the app..” – 2/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “The app resets the time & date of an activity when I edit it. It sets it back to a year 2000, meaning it is lost in statistics. You cannot change the time manually, as far as I can tell. Else, the app is nice.” – 2/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “The website is great for doing research - a one-stop shop across all sites. But, it can get glitchy every now and then. With this last update, when clicking on a campground I'd been researching, it kept pushing me to a neighboring campground. I tried a different campground that is associated with the other 2 sites, and *boop* back to the campground i didn't want again. Every now and again, it will freeze. If you shut it down and bring it back up again, it will be fine. Overall, I enjoy it.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Alex Zhang: “The good: the app looks nice and clean. There's good information on the pages and it's pretty organized. It's pretty straightforward and intuitive to use. The bad: I needed to use this to get Zion shuttle tickets, which are notorious for selling out quickly. This app will show dates with avails but then as soon as you select the date, it'll say unavailable. I know this isn't a case of me just being too slow, because I double-checked on my computer and was able to get tickets there. Woof.” – 2/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Jonathan Smith: “The app is actually extremely good. I absolutely loved using it in Moab and it really is essential. There's just one major issue that kept me from giving it 5 stars. The app is SUPER power hungry, it drains the battery on my phone fast and I have to plug it in every few hours of using it. It also makes my phone run extremely hot. I have rebooted my phone, made sure no background apps are simultaneously running, but it still makes my phone get real hot. The app needs more efficient programming.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Paulo Coelho: “The Android Auto experience is horrible. I downloaded the area beforehand, the app on the car refused to lock down the position putting us way in Minnesota (?), I'm in Washington! The auto experience doesn't respect the phone filtering/settings. In general it has trouble syncing between devices: removing/adding stuff on the web and going to the phone, doesn't show the changes. I tried swiping out the app, clearing the cache, the only thing that worked was re-installing.” – 2/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Kevin A.: “For anyone hiking the PCT, AZT, etc., Guthook is the best info. The price of the maps is reasonable. The only caution I'd add to new users is this: Updating is NOT the same as downloading the maps! I've met lots of hikers who thought they had the maps on their phone, but were seeing them via cellular data. Once on the trail they could only see their location and the trail. To be sure you have everything go to the download manager, & download all maps you will want.” – 5/5 in Play Store

Allison Norton: “Edit: emailed company and they fixed it. Excellent! Only worked the first day. I downloaded the app (android) and purchased The Long Trail guide for 11.99. I could see the maps, way points, comments, everything and it was great. Since then, it tells me "You don't have any trail guides" and if I navigate to the guide options, the Long Trail is on there and it says 11.99 but I can't click on it. I have tried force stop, clearing cache, Uninstall/reinstall, and of course restarting phone.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Cool stuff!” – 5/5 in Play Store

Jon Boy: “Had an issue with the app crashing, reported to the team, fixed very promptly and good communication throughout. Reserving the 5* for when I've properly tested the app out in the field but from what i can see it's an excellent app with a lot of detail and great UI. Certainly a rival to guthook guides for the UK where they don't have as many trails covered.” – 4/5 in Play Store
