Brittany McCue: “Google Maps is an indispensable app for navigating the world. Its accurate maps, real-time traffic updates, and turn-by-turn directions make getting around effortless. The search function is robust, helping users find businesses, restaurants, and attractions with ease. The interface is user-friendly, and the integration with other Google services is seamless. Highly recommend for anyone needing reliable navigation on their smartphone!” – 5/5 in Play Store

Bryan Kaplan: “I had given 1 star because of a bug I described. The bug was fixed, and now I can use Navigation again. Thank you to the bug fixer! The Maps app is not perfect, at all, but I rely on it daily, so 5 stars is appropriate. Edit: dropping down to 4 stars because my male navigation voice was lost when I cleared data, and there's no apparent way to select a male voice.” – 4/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “While this app is useful and helpful everywhere (I use it extensively in the US, Canada, Europe and middle East) It share the same problem though, which is the audio volume is very low compared to the other sounds on the phone (I use Google maps on iPhone, Sony and Samsung) e.g. if you compare to other audio apps, such as songs playing, the maps audio will dim other sounds, but it's still lower than it and no option to increase the volume for Google maps only. If I was programming, then I would do force audio high option as well as I would do extra volume level (value) separately to override other volume control and that will make many people happier.” – 3/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “Meh. Definitely faster than the full version. Missing one of my favorite features. I can't add places to my lists. Only saves to 🌟 Time to go back to My Maps? Google you are confusing me. Stop it with the multiple apps that do basically the same thing! You're not a company really. You're just a bunch of people who happen to work in the same office.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Cons This app may use a lot of data and battery life, and it may not be as accurate as other navigation apps.

Comments and Reviews from users:

A N: “For navigation options, this is by far more superior than Google maps. The speeding camera's being mostly all up to date is a plus for out of town driver's who are not locals. However, a bug persist in the software code when running at the same time with music. I tried Spotify and SoundCloud app. The voice notifications stop after a few mentions of directions or alerts..this is crucial to work as I would prefer to keep my eyes on the road instead of having to look at my phone.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Alyssa Blair: “This app is good for navigation, of course. The reporting of hazards, police presence, and other types of reports make for some great usability. But - It feels like the devs have almost abandoned this app. There's plenty of bugs, and the same issues as when I stopped using the app 3 years ago. For example, the "beep wazer" being grayed out bug has been around for quite a while with no fix. I can't link my socials it seems, and there is a small lag issue.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Kev C: “Very great map, I enjoy the fact that it shows the bar on the side that gives you an overview of the route your on. It helps estimate the traffic conditions, which can help with changing streets if necessary to avoid traffic in LA, since it's always unknown when or where you're going to be stuck in traffic. Would enjoy if you could import a gpx route! Don't know if you can.” – 5/5 in Play Store

Siamak Manzarpour: “Almost a carbon copy of Google Maps. The other feature I noticed while using this app is when I want to use any function that goes through their cloud server, I have to wait about 45 seconds before getting connected. I am not sure why that is but it is almost like the connection gets choked at a checkpoint somwhere and since their cloud servers are located in China, I think I will wait before signing up for their cloud services, for now .” – 4/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “For 2 days trying to use this app, kept crashing after a few seconds, both while on maps, and navigation. Never got to experience the features, but it looks promising...if it was to ever work. Uninstalled. Edit: October 2018 I downloaded and paid for premium services. The app is beautiful, features are awesome, but the routes are horrible!! Been using it for 2 days now in NYC, in areas I know, and it keeps taking me in circles! Today I was on a road, straight path to the bridge, and it kept telling me to go over a block, then continue back on to the road I was, then go over another block, then back to the same road, all day, everywhere I went. And if you pass the turn it tells you to make, imstead of recalculate a new route, it still tries to put you back in the same route you avoided, basicaly sending you back! Something is terribly wrong!” – 3/5 in Play Store

Antonios Karagiannis: “Recently, that Android auto got support, I paid the addon and gave it a try. I was disappointed by the number of times the application freezes while in Android auto. It happens on every Google assistant navigation search and some times even while just navigating/driving somewhere. Losing your directions while driving is a huge problem for me, so for that, I can't keep using it. BTW, the maps even when updated do not include everything that other maps do. Same with the traffic subscription...” – 3/5 in Play Store

Cons May not be as accurate as Google Maps in some areas, Limited public transit information, Some features may require in-app purchases.

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “It has trails in national forests and parks, too. One thing to remember before wandering somewhere new, download maps of the place, while you have wifi or cellular data. I have more than once seen a disturbing divergence between voice guidance and the blue line marking my route. Follow the blue line. The lady is a tramp. If you're a cyclist, you might not want to use this app. The route it suggested from my house to Portland,Ore would have me riding on a busy highway when plenty of country roads would have been a better experience. Google Maps is better.” – 3/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “Update: was 5 stars in 2017, it now has too many ads and trackers, I've switched over to osmand and dropped this to 3 stars. Old: Works great, keep up the good work! Point-to-point routing would be great. It would also be nice if I could pre-load recorded tracks and show them in the app - I sometimes use the app while mountain biking and hiking, and it would be nice to see previous hiker/biker tracks as a point of reference.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Pros Reliable navigation, comprehensive public transit info, user-friendly interface.
Cons Occasional bugs, limited offline functionality in some areas.

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “Good: truly offline available, current speed and speed limit, can look up locations offline, voice navigation, auto re-routing. Bad: routes sometimes not as good as Google maps, address lookup not as good, no ability to add a waypoint or additional stop. Ugly: The app routinely crashes on me, which is awful for a mapping app. Also, even if it doesn't crash if I pull anything else up on the phone (like when I was waiting for my daughter's soccer to get out tonight) often the route I was navigating will just totally disappear.” – 2/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “Compate to Google Maps, this app lacks a few features. The voice navigation is not very good. The sound is not natural enough. In addition, some voice will be inactive with metric unit system. Also unlike Apple Maps or Google Maps, I cannot delete an entry from recent search results. The only option is to clear the entire search history, which is inconvenient if you only want to delete a few search history. If Here Maps could fix those issues and support Android Auto, that will be great.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “Update 201811: updated to v4.0.85 and ability to multi-touch map and see distance line has disappeared on my Galaxy S7 yet it still works fine on Galaxy Tab E and LG Tab. Hoping this can be corrected although not a major issue. Update: > The latest version as of early January 2018 caused problems on both my phone and tablet. Detailed maps disappeared and left me with only major roads. The navigation engine also seemed to have problems finding a solution for long journeys. I reverted back to the previous version and don't seem to have the same problem with street detail after clearing the app cache but routing a long journey still appears to be very slow. Otherwise still very good. < Very good in it's own right but even better when considering the functionality and cost (paid app & OSM maps here). I also use Copilot and, while it's very good as well, the map update schedule doesn't even compare. I also use the PC based version but the mobile version is much easier to use. I've seen people complain about the app and OSM maps but can't imagine why. Installing OSM maps has even added new life to several of my old Garmin handheld and mobile units. Everyone should applaud the hard work and incredible results offered to all of us by this team and those who make OSM maps available. Many here are too young to appreciate what is offered and the occasional shortcomings. Go buy a paper atlas and some gas station maps and rethink your complaints.” – 5/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “I've had it lock up while simulating a route but it's been rock steady while navigating. my only real irritation is that when it interrupts my audio player the player doesn't resume after the navigation instructions. pretty much impossible to use this and listen to an audio book. But for a free navigator that works well offline it is great.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Pros Excellent navigation, detailed maps, great route planning features.
Cons Subscription required for some features, limited offline functionality, can be battery-draining.

Comments and Reviews from users:

Michael Drews: “I love this app so much. I really wish the weather features were available to everyone as a matter of safety. Also I will pay for premium but only if I can pay for it monthly. It's deceptive to even display a monthly price in the app when the only option for paying is to pay the full annual price. This is another matter of accessibility, not everyone can afford to pay for a full year subscription but still would pay for monthly access. Please please please enable monthly billing 🙏” – 4/5 in Play Store

Ken Smith: “There are times this app works as it should, other times it doesn't know its left from its right, literally. Last trip it told me to turn left, I did which tied up with the displayed map, only to be told I was then off the planned route. Also why cant you reverse a route if you have the map stored for off line? Surely that should be easily added, for example, two routes that intersect or have common tracks, why can you not reverse the direction of one route so it matches the other?” – 3/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “This is the best of the GPS navigation apps I found for the Android system so far. It shows good maps, and tracks quite well. Has some idiosyncrasies that are annoying, however. For example, in many Urban settings it only tells you every other or every third cross street. When you're simply looking for a certain turn or intersection this can be an extremely annoying omission. We were a little annoyed with the route planning algorithms when trying to drive through Portland Oregon recently. No matter whether we chose the shortest route, or the fastest route, it seems we got either a bunch of turn offs that were unnecessary, or it dragged us off the interstate onto a bunch of side streets just to make sure we were going the shortest distance. It needs to have some option for, perhaps, the simplest route. When you're pulling a trailer you don't want to be exiting and entering a freeway repeatedly, or driving around on a bunch of tiny surface streets. Lastly, I would really like to see an option for displaying your elevation as you're traveling. That's another handy feature when you're dragging a trailer up a long grade. It can be helpful to know how close to the summit you actually are.” – 4/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “Price for subscription is too high. I was an early adopter and had used this app years ago, at the time Google maps weren't nearly as good and phone data was more expensive and coverage worse, so it made sense to have a standalone navigation app. nowadays, the cost for data, data coverage and gmaps are much much better, that's why I think for me, I would be willing to pay $10 per year for the otherwise great TomTom interface, but not more.” – 5/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “Great app! Love the fact you can share your location ETA with your contacts for more safety and accuracy. I travel to Staten island for work and it's a headache not being able to use the go trip properly cause I cannot select ride types so I always get the Xpress buses which I don't use. Also it does not let you modify or recognizes if you decide to change your route or use another stop more convenient than the one shown. For these reasons I'm changing back to Transit and only will use this when I need to share my ETA. Add inroute modifications and transit lines selection when doing a go trip.” – 4/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “One of the best apps for Android, period. Used this app NYC and Singapore and it worked great. I find getting around subways is not so hard, but buses are trickier and combining the two even harder. Will tell you when/where to pick up a bus, map stops, alarm you when time to get off. It was very helpful in Singapore. Does not list fares, and no turn by turn map navigation line Google, but still a great app. Update: Head to head better than Google maps. More accurate bus times and updates. 11.18” – 5/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Laine T.: “I started using this app because Google maps had temporarily taken away the option to select the time you want. I'm glad I did. It's so convenient. This app does show you the progress you're making on the map, but it goes one step further and actually tells you when a destination is two stops away and when your stop is coming up. That feature, alone, has proven invaluable. It's also much more transparent with how long the wait is for the next bus. I now prefer this app over Google maps.” – 5/5 in Play Store

Normand Asselin: “After a few days, it appears the app is working again. It appears there was an update, and perhaps that was what caused previous issues. It's not perfect, but it is a pretty reliable app, AND it's the only one I know of that's free. All others want $$$ for accurate bus locations. This one is free, but sometimes the GPS position of busses is off, and sometimes it has the wrong bus number connected to the bus that shows up, and you can't submit a way to fix that.” – 3/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “An essential app. Never an issue with maps becoming expired & deleted out from under your feet like 'That Map App' we all are first given However, I would like to make a feature request, as there's a few things missing that ought to be important When you have recorded and or imported tracks as much as I have, you will find that there's no way to decide if you should delete a track while in the GPX menu. There needs to be a way to 'show track on map', in order to decide if it's important It would also be nice if the track log menu could organize tracks based on wherever the on map locator has been left at, either the current location, or when you move the locator to a intended destination The track recordings are named by date & time, but after a year goes by, I couldn't recall which day I was at any particular location. So when it comes time to go back to a favorite campsite, or whatever it is, I have no practical way to choose the correct recording. This is why organizing the tracks by map position would be very useful For GPX users, look at: android/data/net.osmand/files/tracks Custom tracks can go here. Recorded tracks are in the 'rec' folder” – 4/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “An amazing navigational app and location search tool! I love that I can see opening and closing times for places that have them updated on OSM. The interface is a bit daunting and takes a bit of practice/research to understand, but the online documentation for OSMAnd is wonderful as well, and after that learning curve it's an incredibly powerful tool. I use it any time I travel, and also to double check any updates I make to OSM!” – 5/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “Great product. I used it when I was doing property preservation work. Days I did grass cuts, inspections, or snow removal I could have 10 to 20 stops a day all over the state so this made my life much easier. In property prez work you need to be flexible too. This app lets you add and remove stops at any time. This is a VER, VERY GOOD APP. I used it every day and can say the price is worth it as of 2018.” – 5/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “Very impressed! I have been looking for an app that will help me organize the businesses I do audits for. I don't always know the areas well so I found myself going back and forth killing my gas. this app makes it quick and easy to find the best route saving you time and money. 4 instead of 5 stars because, with my work (micro jobs) the $20 a month subscription for unlimited stops is a bit exorbitant. I could see $8-10 but even that is pushing it, when I pay $6 a month for streaming music.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Scott Andrews: “It has a few things missing: 1) it doesn't tell you where police are or have a way to mark where they are, 2) you can't look at the route after you planned it, and 3) the multiple routes shown don't have a listing of what roads you will be using, i.e. major interstates such as I-85, I-285, etc, 3) The speed limit on the road that you're traveling is either not shown or needs to be much larger, and 4) there are only two selections for voices, male or female. Please add more voices.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Brandi Tucker: “I read an article and was excited to try this app out. I was immediately disappointed as the local bodies of water in our area are not labeled correctly. For example, the town reservoir is labeled as a local creek that is over 3 miles from the reservoir and does not connect to it in any way. Makes me wonder what other information being displayed is inaccurate. I will go back to Google Maps and wait for a better alternative sadly.” – 2/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “I've been using this as my primary navigation app for almost five years. I find it to be very easy to use and very customizable. My only complaint is that in a recent update, the developer removed the settings where I could specify my typical driving speed on different types of roads. After this change, I've noticed that the estimated ETA is not as accurate as it used to be. Before this setting was removed, when taking a 2 hour drive, the estimated ETA and the actual ETA would usually be less the 5 minutes apart. Now, the estimated ETA is about 15 minutes greater than the actual ETA. Please bring back this setting.” – 4/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “It isn't the greatest GPS app ever made, not as intuitive as Google maps and requires that you input an actual address.. but when you are driving a large vehicle (mine is a 36ft long 12 ft tall motorhome) it keeps you on roads where your vehicle can fit by avoiding small roads and low bridges. I've only used it for about 800 miles (in a week!) but so far all is good. Few minor things are annoying, but it's better than ripping the roof off my RV on an overpass!” – 5/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “I love how large the fonts are on the map. After using CoPilot for so long. It's nice to be able to read the words on the map without magnification. 3 things that need fixing. 1st: "heading up" stops working at higher zoom out levels. The app reverts back to "north up". 2nd: exit #s are definitely needed for freeway exits. Fix those & this will definitely be 5 stars. 3rd: instead of a scale in the corner of the screen showing how far 1 inch is. A distance at the top & 1 side of the screen would be much more useful.” – 4/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “It navigates, but has critical flaws. In a 3 hr test drive the map wouldn't scroll so the car icon constantly drove off the screen and needed to be manually reset. I tried many times to display position with course up, but it only showed North up (disorienting when driving South). When recentered the car location is center of screen, so half of the screen is area behind you and not of interest. It showed no traffic advisories even though I was in heavy traffic. This was with the free version.” – 2/5 in Play Store
