A Google user: “As much as I appreciate this app, I can't give this app 5 stars until a few things are fixed. 1. The arrows need to go away (they distract my 2 year old into thinking that's where to start). 2. The start of each stroke needs to be defined and highlighted (maybe needs a pencil or marker to drag). 3. There needs to be a way to trace the letters in a continuous motion where you don't have to lift your finger for each corner. Example: the letter W I shouldn't have to lift my finger off the screen four times... Please address these issues and I would love to give 5 stars! It's a cute app with great incentives for littles. I love when my child wants to play educational games like this.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Sue Hasselbring: “I'm a friend of several immigrant families who are new to the US. I've been looking for apps both for the parents and the school age children. This app is wonderful. I'm thankful that there are no ads or other links. I wish there was more tracking of what had been learned and a progression. Tracking, would repeat the difficult letters automatically so they are practiced and reinforced. Progression, would include going from following the dots to writing it without prompts.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “I really love this app, its very engaging my 2 year old loves it! she is learning so much everyday. She gets so excited when the theme music comes on, it makes my day. Im happy to know that she is learning, not just from the weekly progress reports, but by her vocabulary, and things she is able to identify in the real world be it objects, letters, colors, or numbers!!!” – 5/5 in Play Store

Michelle B: “My kiddo loves this app and I really like the different styles used to teach. One thing I don't like is there is no way to block the kid from accidentally hitting the skip button or from pulling down the drop down menu on the top of the phone. It frustrates him and makes it so I can't let him play by himself. Also, it doesn't require you to "finish" units before moving on to the next and can be difficult to go back to a unit. I like the parents page and the mix of real life teachers/ animation.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Raphael Wiebe: “This is a good app if all you need is flashcards. But if you want a detailed learning experience, you're locked behind a paywall. This used to not be this way. It used to be that they'd give you all the learning experience you need (Multiple choice questions, written questions, practice tests, etcetera But within the past year, they've locked all that behind a paywall, losing much of it's use for those who aren't able to pay (Such as young teenagers like myself) But, I guess flashcards are okay” – 3/5 in Play Store

Dessiray Cleary: “honestly using quizlet and buying plus was the best decision I ever made for my grades. A lot of times I don't even have to make them myself because there are already great quizlets already available. I'm in college and this has helped me pass so many classes. It's easy to use, there's practice tests and even a game to play to help you learn. Definitely worth the money to have all the functions but the free version is very useful too!!” – 5/5 in Play Store

Cons Some courses may be outdated or of low quality, and the platform can be overwhelming for beginners.

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “Overall, I'm a fan of this app. I love being able to watch courses on my phone or cast them to my TV and it has many of the features that I liked with the browser version. But it still needs some work. The autoplay is random at best. Sometimes it will play several in a row and then suddenly need me to click on the lesson to load it. Other times it doesn't autoplay at all. Worst is when it decides to start an episode several minutes in and I have to go in and fix it. A decent app but not perfect.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Shari K: “They fixed it so it doesn't crash & freeze anymore. What I wish for are some refinements. Make the sample videos play like a playlist as on computer. To see all the samples all the sections have to be opened manually to see the samples then each has to be played separately. Would be nice to have an expand all sections option. I no longer buy off my phone for this reason. Also, regarding computer version, please make 360p videos available for download like on phone. I travel with my laptop.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Pros Free, comprehensive, personalized, and effective.
Cons Requires an internet connection, videos can be long, and exercises can be repetitive.

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “it's ok, but it lacks a lot of the features of the website such as marking your progress, connect to videos on YouTube, and the discussions. it's just the videos followed by a couple questions without any aid. The main feature it is missing is the discussions where you can interact with other learners, to get additional insight. The discussions need to be included in the app.” – 2/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “It's a very great app, but the Browser version offers more than it. I have 2 main complaints for this app: - Lacks explanations for each answer choice, something that the browser version already has. - Test Practice is essentially worthless in terms of practicing within the app; but links are offered to their browser version, which seems lazy. (Please add in-app practice for Tests like the SAT, it can't be that hard.) Other than that, it functions well and is a great tool for students.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Cons Some courses may require a paid subscription, limited interaction with instructors and classmates compared to traditional classroom settings

Comments and Reviews from users:

Raquel Belury Rosenberg: “Although I've been enjoying the courses and assignments, the app itself is pretty terrible. I usually have to refresh several times to find the class and then after watching the videos, the app doesn't register that I've watched them. Additionally, I can't see my graded/reviewed work or review my peers' work on the app- I have to go to a computer to do that. Since I don't have easy access to a computer (only tablets and phones), I feel uncertain about whether I want to take more courses.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Phill Becker (pb): “Requires a computer for assignments because they're "designed for a larger screen". So I have to open the browser (on my Samsung Fold) to Coursera, copy the assignment link and paste into a new tab, otherwise it just opens the Coursera app again, then request the desktop version in the browser menu, and everything works fine. It's a hassle, but there's a workaround.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Pros Personalized training plans and challenges, Engaging and fun exercises, Effective for improving various cognitive abilities
Cons Some content is limited to premium subscribers, Limited offline functionality, Can be repetitive for extended use

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “This app has a great GUI, fun games, and will help those struggling in certain mental areas while keeping it fun. I was about to buy the Pro version when, lo and behold, it was a monthly payment, instead of the one-time payment I was expecting. This is quite the deterrent to those with a budget already set, such as college students like myself. I can understand the funds that are needed to pay the researchers, but a yearly $60 is a tad too much. Remove that and I'll add a star.” – 4/5 in Play Store

S Royster: “After years on the free version, I accidentally updated to the paid, for a year. I can do more: more games to choose, more games in a session. I find I cannot get the right mix of challenges: I want some math, some memory, and a little writing (the last to make me feel good). Good mix of challenges. I'd maxed several categories at 300, but now the scale tops at 400, so there's work to be done! It's easier to let a few weeks pass between sessions, so I might go back to the free version. UPDATE - I might return to this ... a welcome treat in these unprecedented times.” – 5/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “I absolutely USED to love, love this app. until the update. We've tried experimenting with and getting used to it. The more we use it, the more it looks like many options are missing. My child used to like to color both the boy and girl pictures; listen to boy and girl books. This is no longer available. She used to listen to the different fun environment info & sometimes do the quiz after. That is no longer an option. The app has never been left hand friendly, but we've gotten used to it. Now it's not even child friendly.” – 3/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “One word to describe this app - GLITCHY! You know it's bad when your toddler wants to throw the device because of so many app bugs (and so do i). Tried the app feedback site, but it is pointless since I have this app on different devices - and it performs the same on each platform. The biggest glitch I hate is when he has completed an activity, but it doesn't go back to start another one. It stays on it forever until we have to close it out. This is now an everyday thing. Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't help at all. This app feels like its underdeveloped.” – 2/5 in Play Store

Harcoon Love: “I downloaded this app to see if I'd enjoy coding and want to pursue it in college. Turns out, I LOVE to program! Sololearn is formatted very well for absolute beginners. It's a lot like Duolingo for programming languages, but also has some courses that teach you with minimal languages involved! (That's good, trust me.) It has some typos in it's less used lessons, but leave a comment about it and they'll have it fixed within a few days. Now, it's preimptive studying for my college next fall! <3” – 5/5 in Play Store

Stormy: “the website I think is better than the app for parts of the course, just because it's useful to have your keyboard for the challenges. Sometimes the answers for challenges are a bit too advanced for what was taught thus far. I have found myself often copying the whole thing into Visual Studio because the program built into the website doesn't light elements up as clearly as VS so it is harder to tell how the computer interpret s each element. Other than that, I do like the program.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

C AB: “Learning something new while also being *fun* 🙂. Instructions are easy to follow along and provides repetition and reviews to make sure you are not getting lost. Currently using the free version to test it out for a month, but will probably end up just doing the paid subscription. App works great on my andriod phone and have no issues inputting code.” – 5/5 in Play Store

Josh Denten: “It's a great app to start learning a little bit of code. The problem I have is certain problems arrive when answering coding questions and using their playgrounds feature. You can be typing on one line and it will shoot you down to the bottom. Essentially you can't write code in their app, it's to buggy. Also they trick you. "Buy our pro version to continue" than it's "hop onto a computer to continue" once your on the computer it's "buy max to continue" which is far more expensive than the pro.” – 2/5 in Play Store

Pros Great for teaching kids to spell and read.
Cons Some users have reported that the app can be a bit buggy at times.

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “Fantastic! I've been looking for an app like this for a long time. I homeschool and this is a perfect way to enrich my kindergartener's curriculum. He fills up the bar to the trumpet once a day. I love the features: choosing lower case vs upper case letters, letter sound vs letter name. I can switch those up to keep the game challenging. Thank you for making it free plus ad free. I was expecting to pay for it.” – 5/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “Already a great tool for helping my child learn her phonics and understanding of how words sound! Missing a star because the audio is not adjustable, the music is far too loud and the characters speak far too quiet to keep up with all the sound affects. Music was turned off to no benefit. Hope there will be slidable volume controls soon to fix this!” – 4/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “The learning and videos are good, but the app is a little problematic. The quizzes time-out sometimes, also selecting answers is annoying because it thinks you're selecting an answer when really you just want to see the next multiple choice option. Download to play later works better if you download when you have wifi and watch when you have shoddy internet. If you don't download and try to watch in bad internet... well, you won't. The buffering will take forever, the quality will dip, and you may have to re-watch the same section over and over. Basically, use wifi. If on the road, download beforehand. I also sometimes get the issue of watching a video and it not registering as being watched. Otherwise the content is very good.” – 3/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “I recently subscribed to LinkedIn Learning/Lynda and I am very much impressed overall with the service, both on the web version and the mobile versions of the apps. I have been able to find courses on everything I am looking for and there are usually a few instructors for each topic. One might think this is a terrible thing because of potentially repetitive information, but by simply watching the different instructors, you may find someone who makes you feel most comfortable which is most important in any learning experience. This is a fantastic service to support experts who are willing to take the time out to teach and enrich those who are willing to learn. Thank you for the service!” – 5/5 in Play Store

Cons Requires internet access, some features may require a subscription, limited offline content

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “Love this app!! I've spent so much time downloading, trying out, and deleting apps while searching for something appropriate for my toddler to use. I'm impressed and love that it's geared towards learning, as opposed to just mindless play. It has so many different important, and in my opinion, usually untouched (by other apps,) subjects and lessons. It seems that most apps for kids 5 and under only include shapes, colors, or letters and numbers, which is nice, but my child has those mastered already, so I was thrilled to see the range of learning topics covered. Between the content, the lack of ads, easy navigation, I'd say Great job! Keep it up! I'll definitely be recommending this app!” – 5/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “First of all, I must give my gratitude to the Developers of this app. My child loves it and is learning lots from it. And the Super Simple Songs integrated with the games are really great. But the app tends to have some seriously glitchy behaviours. It often shuts off in mid-game and takes the user to the phone home screen. It freezes at that point for some time with a black screen and when trying to getting back into it, it resets the game so my child loses where the game left off. It's a real test of patience at that age. I have had to restart my phone in order to get it to work again sometimes. On another note, certain things that are required to be either clicked or dragged are placed way to close to the top of the screen, which oftentimes causes my child to activate the slide-in menu from the phone during some games. Also a minor thing, when there's a song involved, there are moments where the song is paused in order to begin an interactive game. But the songs are often paused on odd times. It's really not so crucial but it triggers my OCD to some degree. I would suggest to try to tackle that with a little more finesse :) I realize it's in beta but I hope they pay attention to these things when the time comes to launch the real thing. Other than the things I mentioned, we really love this app!” – 4/5 in Play Store

It's a perfect balance of stories, writing, learning to sound out letters/words and sight words. I can't wait to watch her progress through more levels. We finish level 1 in the first weekend. I've been telling all the caregivers at my programs about this app. I'm hoping you make ones for learning other languages too. Thanks for being ad free!” – 5/5 in Play Store

Alexis Johnson: “Amazing app for young kids! My daughter began kindergarten this year. We've been doing a few lessons every night and I'm shocked by how much she's picked up! Almost three months in class and she wasn't sounding out words yet, but 4 days with this app and she's picking up words from books she's sounded out herself. I also love that it's ad-free and simple to use.” – 5/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Victor Ude: “After trying it out for a few months I'd say Brilliant is good for those wanting an introduction to subjects. It's does not hold up well when you need deeper learning. The pace of lessons can be wildly inconsistent. Sometimes content is presented in small digestible parts. Often times leading questions are asked which can be a bit discouraging because the foundation hasn't been properly established to independently tackle those problems (yet). Worth a try but Khan Academy is a better value.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Nehemiah Abel: “I use this app instead of playing mobile games during my breaks at work, ngl; I honestly thought I'd easily grow bored, but so far, it's pretty good and I have learned quite a bit. If I could ask for any improvement(s) to the app, then it'd be text-to-speech so I can listen to the lessons while working. Another thing that I'd personally like is maybe a system that other users of the app could make/post their lessons. Thx Brilliant team!” – 5/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “I think the intentions are good and it's more of a practice app then trying to learn. But I think it is ridiculous on the amount of points it takes off because you get it wrong especially in the challenge zone. You only go up 1 point and lose about 10 to 15 if its wrong. It also kind of discourages kids like myself, and they can just give up without finishing and it shouldn't feel like that. I know someone that once threw their phone out of frustration and cracked their phone.” – 2/5 in Play Store

Presley Carroll: “Not a terrible app, but could be better. As a student, my one complaint is the point system. It can take hours to get to 100 and if you get one question wrong it will drop significantly. Although this is extremely frustrating and annoying, it is an overall good learning app, it has a nice description and explanation as to why you get something wrong if you do, and there are even rewards.” – 2/5 in Play Store
