Comments and Reviews from users:

Satoko Yuda: “As one advances and lessons get harder, it is very difficult to learn without other sources such as books or youtube without getting penalized. I stopped using it after 6 months and switched to Mango Languages. It is much better structured and easier to follow and understand for me. It is also more repetitive which helps me memorize terms.” – 2/5 in Play Store

C N: “For what they charge for the paid version, some things are so annoying. Like the volume difference. 1 sentence super low and the next super loud. I'm on day 35 and I think they've replayed the same story at least 5 times. Some vocabulary updates would be great. I'm going through the lessons with Mexican friends, who are saying how outdated some sentences are. Overall I wish I had not upgraded to paid subscription.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

A Google user: “I couldn't wait to leave a review on this app. It is Amazing!!! I'm having so much fun repeating every sentence. Studying with the tv shows I like and being able to slow motion, catching every sound of each word and imitating to improve inflection all at once. I love it, love it, love it. Highly recommended.” – 5/5 in Play Store

Ashley Dyer: “I want to give it five stars but I have one problem that is really annoying. When I'm doing the speaking test, no matter how loud I'm speaking, it doesn't register my voice and says, "speak louder and more precisely." It also just glitches and doesn't record my voice at all sometimes, so I exit the app and start it again and have the same problem over and over.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Kara Edge: “I have tried many language apps, but this one is the best hands down. many options for learning, accurate pronunciations (of Dutch at least), and great explanations of words, grammar, and even culture! **Update 5/2024 - used to love this app, but it's become impossible to use the voice function. My Dutch speaking partner even tries the words and it fails him. No matter what, it never registers what you are saying. They've done some very poor un-improvements to the voice and speaking function**” – 2/5 in Play Store

Latham Hedeen: “Structured in a way that you can really see the progress. Not gamified. UPDATE: Taking a couple stars away. This new interface is not my favorite. Specifically, Babbel dropping the review number that would pop up every day. Sounds dumb, but it was another way to keep motivated. Also, worse yet, microphone now takes FOREVER to register and allow you to use it. Activities and reviews take three times as long now. Update 2: app is back and mostly working as well as it used to.” – 5/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Wil Fry: “For the first couple of weeks, this was great! It explained things that Duo didn't. But now it's skipping ahead and quizzing me on things I have no way of knowing. (Example: it just taught me new words in hiragana, but the quiz uses entirely kanji.) I've used the "report issue" button numerous times, but there's simply no way to advance. (Re: developer response: there's nothing more to tell. If I was taught the word in hiragana, that doesn't help me guess the kanji.)” – 2/5 in Play Store

Mary Lapara: “So happy someone recommend this app for learning German!! Duolingo had dumbed their lessons down so badly, it was mind numbing. I have been using Busuu for 2-3 months now and I love it. So, I hope they know they have a good product and don't "fix" anything as it's Not broken. 🙂 I learn by having to write/type things out and the grammar and vocabulary lessons on here are great and so necessary to learning a new language. Much love to Busuu, keep up the good work!” – 5/5 in Play Store

Cons Can be repetitive at times. May not be suitable for complete beginners.

Comments and Reviews from users:

Gary Urry: “Great app, love how they have native speakers talking and not just a fake computer voice, but the new update needs improvements! While I am going through a scenario it constantly has the 'next for you' pop up for something else, even when I have not completed the scenario! Please make an option so we can opt out of the 'next up for you' widget!!” – 3/5 in Play Store

Timothy Favorite: “Overall, memrise is fantastic learning software. The pacing is good. They give you literal translations, which really helps you understand the language. They also have recordings of locals speaking so you can develop an ear for the language. I will say, I'm not a fan of the speed review, but there's no penalty for skipping it, but there is an option to reduce the amount of words you do in a session, more than 10 can get stressful.” – 5/5 in Play Store

carl wirtz: “I like the repetition, but not the random sequence of unrelated expressions and the ask to spell simple words spelled exactly as in my mother language. Such words also don't need to be repeated. It would serve the Daily Exercises better if the expressions are centered progessively around a primary subject for a week to make the weekly exercise a more effective review. And how many times does "I have a cat" have to be drilled? It would be super to be able view learned vocabulary lists.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Filip Wolak: “The good: allowed me to learn from my native language. The lessons were organized into meaningful groups. Seems like a quick way to pick up a few words or sentences of a new language or drill into specific vocabulary. Pronunciation recognition is done well. The not so good: there is really no logical flow to the lessons. Grammar topics do not explain much. Haven't found any differences between beginner and advanced. Chatbot only accepts predetermined answers. Keep expanding, it has potential” – 3/5 in Play Store

Jackie Maass: “I really enjoy using the app and there's enough variation that I look forward to trying different things each day. I wish there were more games to play (currently only 2) and lessons or instructions specifically on conjugation. When playing one of the games or reading a text, you can select words "to learn" but I wish that option was available in the other game as well. I also wish more of the words were underlined (which brings up the translation) in the text.” – 4/5 in Play Store

Mitishi: “I took a quiz prior to starting the lessons. It seems that no matter how many words you know, you still start with "hola" and the very basics. It feels like a waste of the free 7 day trial. I do like the visual and audio lessons, but I am still completing lessons for words/phrases that I already have learned. That's a little disappointing, especially since there was an assessment.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Lauren Wolf: “So far I really like the app and am considering purchasing the pro version. My English is already on the Native level so I struggle with "finishing touches". The one improvement that I would make is when there's practice after a lesson, it highlights in yellow sounds that weren't great but the app doesn't tell me what exactly I'm doing wrong. This would be huge help!” – 4/5 in Play Store

Zaki Maksyutov: “Was looking for an automated way to learn what I mispronounce. Two issues. 1. When app spotted that I pronounced something incorrectly then very often recording of my pronunciation was misaligned (for instance, it played back the next word). As a result it was not clear whether I actually made errors or it was just an algorithm issue 2. I tested a program on my native speaker teenager and an app gave very low score (lower than mine). I definitely would be more than happy to ever achieve that level. I don't think the score reflected the reality. Overall these two issues made me not to trust this app. Though the app might be great and this was just anecdotal very limited cases I'm not sure it will work for me.” – 2/5 in Play Store

Cons Can be addictive, may not be suitable for beginners, some users may encounter fake profiles or inappropriate behavior.

Comments and Reviews from users:

Michael: “Works very well, lacking stickers (unless I can't find the others) but the app is very fast and very simple to figure out. It's unfortunate that there isn't a word-for-word dictionary lookup, but perhaps that's something that can be added in the future. Edit: 7 years later, I've gotta lower my rating. The app is basically unusable is you don't pay. Everything you press leads you to the subscription screen. Nobody messages back anymore. Notifications don't seem to arrive on time or at all.” – 2/5 in Play Store

J Balls: “A well-made app. You can speak with native speakers of the language you are learning with both text and audio, post status updates, etc. My only complaint is the correction function. It's overly abused by its users to the extent that I (and possibly many others) often get discouraged from learning any more. I see people "correct" others incorrectly all the time (my native language is English), and it's made me wish I could hide corrections altogether.” – 4/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “They have a lot of fun ways to learn phrases. I am learning Brazilian Portuguese. However, there are so many vocabulary and grammatical errors that if you do not know better, you are getting negative learning. Also, you get a score at the end of each section and half the sections don't give you your score. Very poor quality control when, for example, the possessive pronoun for a female object is given in the mail form or the translation of a phrase is incorrect.” – 3/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “This app was amazing till intermediate level. I just started on advanced level, probably finished 5 to 10 subtitles. But suddenly for lot of words there is no image or sound. Please help. Im afraid if i reinstall whether my unlocked levels and previous stats will go away. Please please help.” – 5/5 in Play Store

Tayler Rae: “the speech on this app is awful!!! It won't let me speak and then when it does let me speak it says that I'm wrong so I have to back out and shut down the app and then go back in and reset the issue. you guys have a "how was our speech device" thing right after that and you do NOTHING about the fact that this hasn't changed since last year and probably way before. it's not ny laptop because this is the second laptop I've had with this app. this is ridiculous!!!!please fix your app!!!!” – 2/5 in Play Store

Sunshine: “I've done the full series of lesson 1 in German. I like how they match the words to pictures. It seems like a good app. I am enjoying it so far. I have nothing to compare the app to as this is the first language learning app I've tried. I will probably do all of the lessons in Rossetta Stone, and then I plan on also trying out babble to compare them and to just have extra learning lessons. I'm excited to learn German again! SUPER FUN app to pass the time, rather than playing a pointless game.” – 5/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “I like the app, but there's a problem with audio and photo messages (or really just messages in general). When someone sends me an audio message or a photo, I get a notification but the actual message never shows up. I've tried force closing the app, refreshing, waiting, etc. It just doesn't come. Also when I try to send an audio message, I have to close the app after I've sent it and re-open it to see if my message really did send. Otherwise, I'm not able to see it in the chat. I've accidentally sent audio messages multiple times because I would think it didn't send and then record a new one. Please fix!” – 3/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “The app is great in theory, but is unusable in practice. Notifications won't get delivered, so I never know if someone has sent me a message. Messages appear read even though I didn't read them, and behavior is generally erratic. Unusable until these bugs are fixed, and it's a pity. I bought a one year subscription but canceled it when I realized the app doesn't work properly.” – 2/5 in Play Store

Cons Limited language options compared to some competitors, occasional technical glitches, and a lack of advanced grammar explanations for some languages.

Comments and Reviews from users:

Rin M: “I'm conflicted on this. I feel like a beginner (in Japanese) would feel like they got thrown in the deep end, & close to nothing is explained fully, if it all. Going through it initially, the only reason it was ok for me was because I've already done duolingo & got used to it, I still struggled with spelling out long words though. As an intermediate review course, this is great so far. But I wish there was a "no sound" lesson option since I can't usually listen to it. My textbooks are better.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Jade Jones: “The first lesson is free, but after that you have to buy a subscription. The program itself is fun but you will not be taken through the introductory things such as the alphabet it is more like grammar and objects. I wish it would let you use your own keyboard instead of theirs as I would find it more helpful for memory retention. The lessons are fun, the stories are useful for listening, and I like the outline of the program as a whole. They also have a separate section just for the grammar!” – 3/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Jeremiah Blatz: “The good: it has lots of languages. Matching words to pictures is novel. The bad: tries to have you memorize full sentences, despite not having any grammar lessons. The speaking part of said long sentences gets cut off. Repetition timing seems way off, doing words I know cold over and over, and neglecting words that I've forgotten. All in all, I use it, but only because it's the only app I found that has gamified learning for Croatian. It's very frustrating.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Sarah Linhares: “It's a good app for vocabulary, but it doesn't teach you anything about sentence structure, grammar, conjugation, etc. all while giving you full sentences to try and remember. I tend to use both Drops and Duolingo to get the best learning experience for myself. Edit: I had an issue where the app would forget I have a lifetime premium membership every time I closed and reopened it. Customer support sent me a new lifetime code promptly and I haven't had issues since. Great customer service!” – 5/5 in Play Store

Brown Sugar: “Initially the app worked great. It was responding to my voice and I was moving through the lessons. However the mic would stop reacting to my voice and making me repeat words over & over. I then did the update and it worked for a little while BUT now there is a delayed response with everything...you think it didn't hear you but then it responds. It's so annoying. Needless to say, I won't be renewing.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Mekaku Chan: “Listen, I think the premise is good! I downloaded it because of the ads I saw on instagram, however, the app isn't on par with the ads. For example, Sometimes the microphone doesn't pick up my voice ?? like, it just doesn't register no matter how clear or how loud I say it. Also, it says "writing exercise" but you're not really writing anything. You're just choosing words. Sometimes, even if you say it right, it still marks it as if you've pronounced it wrong. All and all.. there's better apps.” – 2/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

C Sch: “I really liked it but It just couldn't recognize what I was saying. I was having to yell at it for it to understand the Spanish word "dos" every time I said it it never would recognize it. The premise is really good. I don't have a thick accent or anything like that. I would speak very very slowly, I would speak very very loudly, but it would always leave out one word on the translation. I would love to use it but it just got too frustrating so I canceled before the full charge is applied” – 3/5 in Play Store

Jaxsen Ball: “Unparalleled opportunities to practice language exchange. I love this app and am beginning to feel more confident speaking. What held back a 5/5: 1) Sometimes provides corrections as if I was speaking my native language (i.e. tells me how I'd say it in English not Spanish) 2) If any noises are around, it has trouble recognizing input (doesn't register at all) 3) Expensive: I'd expect it to cost more than some apps due to features, but premium costs more than any app I've ever had.” – 4/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “Much better than the previous apps which had very low quality pictures and many completely useless words. The pictures are generally very good and audio sounds very natural. The only thing that needs improvement is translations. Russian is usually pretty accurate as far as I can tell except that the word "you" is always translated as a plural, even if it doesn't match the picture. Others like Chinese though have a lot of mistakes. There needs to be a button to report incorrect translations!!!” – 5/5 in Play Store

A Google user: “FEL is a very effective learning program for learning a foreign language. it uses multiple ways of reinforcing what you are leaning beginning with vocabulary and proceeding with word recognition skills and seeing the word in your language and requiring you to spell it in the language you are learning. It also requires you to match words among other words. I love this learning system.” – 5/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Bryan Rodriguez: “I have been enjoying this resource. With the help of my tutors i have been able to push forward in my studies, and there is a wide range of tutors available from a number of countries. The tutors options i feel are plentiful. Video and audio quality are great. I've experienced minor technical difficulties, but they happen very seldomly and they are usually easily resolved with resetting either the browser or computer.” – 5/5 in Play Store

Éamon Layden: “I've had only good experiences on this app. My tutor is amazing, though I wish the tutors were paid more fairly from the app itself. The app protects students and tends to favor students over the tutor. But it's quite easy to use and has lots of helpful qualities- such as reminders, the ability to see your tutoring schedule on a calendar, the ability to have automatically repeating lessons at specific dates/times, etc. Overall, great app! I only wish they treated their tutors better” – 5/5 in Play Store

Comments and Reviews from users:

Daniel Wall: “The audio courses are excellent, but everything else about the app feels completely half-baked and seems to just exist to justify the higher subscription tier. It's also very buggy and performs ridiculously slowly. Consider subscribing to the audio-only plan, which saves you around $5/month. You won't miss the useless app features.” – 3/5 in Play Store

Timothy Sarell: “As far as I can tell, you guys are doing a GREAT JOB and absolutely AMAZING as far as content is concerned!! :) My one suggestion is, as far as the app is concerned, I like to be able to do the lessons while I am driving in my car, however, I like to be safe and follow the rules of the road/ the law, and not mess with my phone too much... Is there some way that you're able to make it accessible to toggle with play/ pause/ skip commands for lessons from the lock screen instead of in app only?” – 5/5 in Play Store

Cons Limited language options compared to some competitors, repetitive exercises and lack of grammar explanations.

Comments and Reviews from users:

Ratha: “It's especially great with me needing a lot of reposition to learn something, and with my ADHD a game is perfect for that. While the game itself isn't perfect and I hope many more features are able to pop up in the future, I know designing a game like this is not easy and for what it is it does well. I really hope for new languages to be added and would love to see indigenous languages added as well, such as navajo :)” – 4/5 in Play Store

Dax Avelino Tuazon: “I like the premise: play a game while learning. I have learned words and phrases. Although, I don't always recall them, I have recalled more than I have forgotten. I'm into my fifth month playing/learning. I am concerned about verb conjugation but I think this app plans to teach through examples, repetition and memorization. If you're playing for free, you're not going to have enough exposure unless you figure out how to extend your daily game time. 2 ads/day to extend play; 4-5 daily better(?)” – 4/5 in Play Store
